Following the Leader
Tuesday, February 4, 2025 by Ruth P. Harbour

Since early childhood, all of us play “Follow the Leader.” That is how we learn, by copying others. So we are all followers.

But we are, also, all leaders.  Every single person has someone who is watching them, learning from them. Sometimes parents complain that their children learned their bad habits; they did not intend on passing on their foibles, but they did!

So let’s be intentional about what we pass on to others. Jesus came and lived with his twelve disciples, modeling a God-centered and love-oriented life. Then when the time came for him to ascend into heaven, he gave them what is called the “Great Commission:”

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

Such a huge task! How does one get started?

First, make a list of those you influence—family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. You are their leader whether you like it or not!

Second, pray for them. Pray that God will open their hearts to know him and deliver them from their lostness.

Third, “teach them to observe all that Christ has commanded!” THAT”S A TALL ORDER!”  The apostle Paul puts it very simply in Philippians 4:9—

“What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

God wants to use you to lead others to know him! It is a privilege he is calling you to. So when you learn something beneficial, pass it on to those who follow you. If you are blessed by the prayer life of a Brother, do what he models, and share what you are learning with your followers. When you are blessed by what you hear preached from the pulpit or in Bible study, pass it on! You will discover that God is using you as a channel of his blessings!

As the old campfire song goes—“It only takes a spark to get a fire going. And soon all those around will warm up in its glowing.  That’s how it is with God’s love once you’ve experienced it. The Lord of love has come to me! I want to pass it on!”

Then share this principle with those you influence, and watch the fire of revival spread!
